Best Time to Visit Tanzania

When to go for safaris, Zanzibar beaches, and the Great Migration.

Tanzania offers incredible experiences year-round, but timing can make a big difference depending on whether you want wildlife, beaches, or both.

Dry Season (June – October)

This is the peak safari season. Vegetation is thinner, making wildlife easier to spot around water sources. The Great Migration river crossings in the Serengeti often happen between July and September — a bucket-list spectacle.

  • Best for: Serengeti safaris, Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro trekking
  • Weather: Cool mornings, warm days, little rain
  • Note: Higher demand — book lodges and tours early

Green Season (November – May)

The "short rains" (November–December) and "long rains" (March–May) bring lush landscapes and fewer crowds. Birdwatching is excellent, and calving season in the southern Serengeti (January–February) is magical.

  • Best for: Budget travelers, photographers, birding
  • Zanzibar: December–February and June–October are ideal for beach holidays
  • Note: Some roads in parks can be muddy during heavy rains

Zanzibar Beach Season

Zanzibar is warm year-round (25–32°C). The driest, sunniest months are June through October and December through February. Ramadan and local holidays may affect restaurant hours — we help you plan around these.
